Planning

During this phase, the actual problem as well as the actual solution for the stipulated problem is identified. An implementable plan is then developed to execute the actual solution.

Why the strong focus on planning?

1.

The potential to add value and the level of influence on the project is the highest during initiation and planning. This potential decreases from hereon. (See blue line.)

2.

The costs of changing increases as the project progresses. (See maroon line.)

3.

It helps to optimise activities in terms of resources and time.

4.

The process forces participants to think about what the project involves and what the interdependencies are.

5.

It creates a plan against which progress can be measured so that deviations can be spotted and managed in good time.

6.

A well considered plan offers protection against claims for unrealistic target dates.

7.

It is a communication tool.
