Prof van Niekerk is a member of the following ethical committees:

• The Ethics Committee of the Medical Research Council of South Africa
• The Clinical Ethics Committee of Tygerberg Hospital

Prof van Niekerk is also

• a member of the Editorial Board of Bioethics for the Developing World
• a member of the International Association for Bioethics
• a member of the task group investigating the creation of a National Ethics Committee of the National Science and Technology Forum.
• a member of the advisory body of the Unilever Centre for Comparative and Applied Ethics, University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg

He has acted a Distinguished Guest Professor in Medical Ethics at the Dept. of Medical Humanities, Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina, USA, and has lectured on medical ethics at various international scholarly conferences. He has recently been invited to give two lectures on medical ethics at the University of Louvain, Belgium in November 2001.

He is currently co-editing (with Prof Loretta Kopelman) a special edition of the Journal of Medicine and Philosophy on HIV/AIDS in Africa.
